NATO 3.0 and the Evolving Logic of Transatlantic Security

This year’s NATO Summit convenes at a difficult time for transatlantic relations as European and U.S. security policies and priorities fall out of sync. What’s next for NATO is obscured by the convergence of geopolitical threats, internal tensions, and a continuing need to redefine the alliance’s purpose and burden-sharing model to suit today’s needs. A new logic of transatlantic security is evolving, at the center of which is the idea of NATO 3.0. The new logic has not yet arrived, remaining contested and uncertain.

Hosted by Dr. Shane Szarkowski, Diplomatic Courier Editor-in-Chief, and led with a lightning talk by World in 2050 Senior Fellow Dr. Jessica Conser, this Virtual Signal Salon convenes members of the World in 2050 community of experts the day after this year’s summit in Ankara closes. Together, participants will explore the implications of what did and did not happen at the summit, and what that tells us about the evolving logic of transatlantic security and the identity of a NATO 3.0. The conversation seeks to surface both the dynamics pressuring the alliance and the role evolving multi-stakeholder diplomacy can play in shaping the alliance’s future.
